Eye Of The Needle
Matthew 19:24 mentions Jesus pointing out that it's "easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God." What a crazy visual. I had to build a Christian t-shirt design around it.
To me, it's a commentary on how living in plenty and safety can be a handicap. If we're effortlessly able to provide for ourselves, it's easy to forget that we're just as desperate as the person living from paycheck to paycheck. Who needs God when you have a solid 401k?
I've seen bumper stickers that say "Comfort Wants to Kill You." It's a similar sentiment, I suppose. As creatures of limitation, we will never escape the need for God.
And by the way, I don't see this verse as a condemnation of wealth. It's just one more pitfall that stalks the flawed human condition. And EVEN THE RICH are subject to God's grace.
